Jury Comment: The winner of the long documentary competition is a moving and gripping film about the necessity of hope, friendship and passion. Ultimately it is about life and death itself. Through the eyes of Henry Marsh- a committed neurosurgeon from England and Igor-his long time friend and colleague from the Ukraine - we are made aware of the serious dilemmas of the doctor- patient relations as well as the poor medical and difficult political conditions in a former soviet state. It is a cleverly structured narration that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. The beautiful score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis subtly underscores the powerful experience.

Synopsis:

“The English Surgeon” is an intimate portrait of neurosurgeon Henry Marsh as he openly confronts the dilemmas of the doctor patient relationship on his latest mission to Kiev in Ukraine.

Biografía:

Geoffrey Smith nació en Melbourne. En 1987 estaba rodando un documental sobre la primera elección en Haíti en 31 años, pero tras el descubrimiento del masacré de 21 votantes en una escuela, le dieron salió herido de un balazo. Luchando a recomponer su vida en Londres, Geoffrey decidió regresar a Haití para filmar el encuentro con el hombre quien casi lo mató.
